13 Things Ontario Buyers Ask About the 2026 Subaru Outback — Answered

The 2026 Subaru Outback is the seventh generation of one of Subaru's most popular vehicles — and it arrives with more standard features, a larger cargo area, a new infotainment system, and an updated safety suite compared to what came before. For buyers doing their research, a lot of questions come up around the powertrain choices, towing numbers, safety features, and what's different about this generation. Here are the answers to the questions that come up most often.

The 2026 Outback is a complete redesign, not a refresh. The roofline is taller by 50 mm, the cargo area is larger, the centre display is all-new, and the EyeSight system has been upgraded to include features that weren't available on any previous Outback. The lineup has also been restructured — Touring is now the entry-level trim, replacing what used to be called Convenience.

What Are the Available Trims for the 2026 Outback?

The 2026 Subaru Outback comes in four trim levels:

  • Touring — The entry-level trim, now better equipped than any previous base Outback
  • Limited XT — Adds the turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, leather seating, and upgraded comfort features
  • Wilderness — The most off-road-focused trim, with 241 mm of ground clearance and all-terrain tires
  • Premier XT — The most feature-rich Outback, with the turbocharged engine and top-level interior appointments

What Engines Does the 2026 Outback Use?

Two engines are available in the 2026 Outback lineup.

The Touring trim uses a revised naturally aspirated 2.5-litre SUBARU BOXER engine producing 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a Lineartronic CVT with 8-speed manual shift mode and Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive. Towing capacity on the Touring is 1,224 kg (2,700 lbs).

The Limited XT, Wilderness, and Premier XT use a 2.4-litre turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine producing 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque at 2,000–4,800 rpm. This engine is also paired with a Lineartronic CVT with 8-speed manual shift mode and Symmetrical AWD. Towing capacity with the turbocharged engine increases to 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs).

Both engines use regular 87-octane fuel.

How Much Cargo Space Does the 2026 Outback Have?

The 2026 Outback carries 980 L of cargo behind the second row — more than any previous Outback and more than most other vehicles in the segment. With the rear seats folded flat, total cargo capacity reaches 2,280 L. The load floor is 1,100 mm wide between the wheel wells, and liftover height sits at 720 mm.

A hands-free power liftgate with LED lighting and memory function is standard equipment across the lineup, as is a flexible tonneau cover made from recycled materials and additional cargo hooks rated up to 2.7 kg.

What Safety Features Come Standard?

Every 2026 Outback comes with the latest-generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes:

  • Front Pre-Collision Braking with radar
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with vehicle hold
  • Lane Centring Assist
  • Emergency Lane Keep Assist
  • Emergency Stop Assist
  • Acceleration Override Assist
  • Wide-angle mono camera for improved pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Haptic-feedback steering wheel warning
  • Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection (Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert)
  • DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System (standard on all 2026 trims, including Touring for the first time)
  • Reverse Automatic Braking

On selected higher trims, additional EyeSight features include driver-supervised hands-free highway driving up to 135 km/h, Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, Pre-Curve Speed Control, and Highway Active Lane Change Assist.

What Is Hands-Free Highway Driving on the 2026 Outback?

The 2026 Outback introduces driver-supervised hands-free highway driving on designated highways at speeds up to 135 km/h. This system — part of the updated EyeSight suite — is available on select higher trims and uses a combination of cameras, radar sensors, and Lane Centring to allow the driver to keep their hands off the wheel during highway travel while remaining attentive and in control. It is not a self-driving system; driver supervision is required at all times.

What Is Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection?

This is a new feature appearing for the first time on a Subaru vehicle. If the driver becomes unresponsive while Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control is active, the system will determine if a lane change is needed to safely pull the vehicle toward the road shoulder. It then activates the hazard lamps, notifies emergency services, and unlocks the doors for first responders. It is designed to reduce risk in medical emergencies while driving.

What's New on the Inside?

The interior of the 2026 Outback is significantly updated compared to the outgoing model. Every trim now comes standard with:

  • An all-new 12.1-inch Subaru Multimedia touchscreen (12.1-inch with cloud navigation on higher trims)
  • A 12.3-inch full digital gauge cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Automatic dual-zone climate control with humidity sensor and rear vents
  • Wireless phone charger in the centre console
  • Proximity key with push-button start
  • Power tilting and sliding sunroof
  • Front and rear wiper de-icers
  • High-capacity roof rails

Lateral sway in the new Outback has been reduced by 42 per cent compared to its predecessor. New low-fatigue seats mounted directly onto the chassis improve long-distance comfort and reduce head movement on longer drives.

What Is the 2026 Outback Wilderness?

The Wilderness is the off-road variant of the Outback lineup. It uses the 260 hp, 2.4-litre turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine, delivers 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs) of towing capacity, and sits higher than the rest of the lineup with 241 mm of ground clearance versus 220 mm on the non-Wilderness trims. It runs on all-terrain Bridgestone Dueler tires mounted on Wilderness-exclusive 17-inch matte black wheels, and includes electronically adaptive suspension with an off-road mode tuned for rough terrain. Approach angle improves to 20 degrees and breakover angle moves to 21.2 degrees compared to the standard Outback.
