5 Reasons Why the 2026 Subaru BRZ Is Still One of the Most Engaging Sports Coupes for Summer Drives

Summer in Ontario means open roads, less traffic on the way to the cottage, and finally some dry pavement to enjoy. If you’ve been eyeing a sports coupe for exactly that kind of drive, the 2026 Subaru BRZ deserves a look before the season gets away from you.

1. Rear-Wheel Drive Puts You in the Loop

The BRZ sends its power to the rear wheels only, a layout that changes how the car steers and rotates through a corner compared to a front-wheel-drive commuter. With the engine mounted low and the weight balanced front to rear, the BRZ turns in sharply and lets the rear end do some of the work when you ask for it.

On a dry, twisting road, that translates into a car that feels like it’s responding to you, not just carrying you along.

2. The Naturally Aspirated Boxer Engine Builds Power Predictably

Under the hood is a 2.4-litre horizontally opposed 4-cylinder Boxer engine making 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with no turbocharger in the mix. That naturally aspirated setup means power builds in a straight line as the revs climb, rather than arriving all at once. It’s an engine that rewards planning your corner exit and picking your gear, which is exactly the kind of driving a warm-weather backroad invites. The engine requires 93 AKI premium fuel, worth knowing before a summer road trip.

3. A Manual Gearbox and a Limited-Slip Differential Keep You Involved

The base BRZ and tS pair the engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, close-ratio and fully synchronized, with a hydraulically operated dry single-plate clutch. The Sport-tech trim instead uses a 6-speed automatic. Behind that, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential helps put power down evenly through a corner instead of spinning one wheel. Together with a performance-tuned suspension, using MacPherson-type struts up front and a double-wishbone setup at the rear, the chassis stays composed when you lean on it.

4. Compact Coupe Proportions Make Tight Roads Easy

At 4,265 mm long and 1,775 mm wide, the BRZ is a small car by modern standards, with a 10.8-metre turning circle that helps in tighter switchbacks and parking. The low-slung driving position gives a clear view of the road ahead through corners, and the car’s size makes it easy to place precisely on a narrow rural route.

That same compact footprint works just as well for a city-to-cottage run through Ontario as it does for a Sunday drive with no particular destination.

5. Four Trims, Each With a Different Take on the Same Formula

The 2026 lineup runs from the base BRZ through Sport-tech, tS, and the limited 雷 Kaminari Edition, and the differences are about experience and presentation more than raw output. All four share the same 228-hp Boxer engine. The base BRZ rides on 17-inch wheels with a 6-speaker audio system and premium cloth seats, while Sport-tech and tS step up to 18-inch wheels, a premium 8-speaker system, and leather with Ultrasuede inserts.

The tS goes further with Brembo four-piston front brakes and gold-painted calipers plus Hitachi-Astemo dampers, while the Kaminari Edition builds on the tS with its own Sunrise Yellow paint and yellow-stitched cabin. Every trim keeps the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, and the same 2+2 coupe layout, which means rear seats and the 178-litre trunk work best for small bags rather than a full cottage haul.

Who the 2026 BRZ Suits Best

This isn’t a car for someone who needs to haul four adults and their luggage. It’s for the driver who wants a light, rear-wheel-drive coupe that feels engaged on a good road, whether that’s a manual-shift purist drawn to the base BRZ and tS or someone who wants the same chassis with an automatic in the Sport-tech.

The 2+2 layout and modest trunk space work fine as a daily driver for one or two people who value how the car drives over how much it can carry.

Getting Behind the Wheel of the 2026 BRZ

The 2026 Subaru BRZ pairs a naturally aspirated Boxer engine with rear-wheel drive and a driver-focused chassis, built around the idea that a sports coupe should reward the person driving it. Its size, transmission choices, and trim-by-trim hardware differences give Ontario drivers a few different ways to get at the same core experience.

Visit Subaru of Maple in Vaughan, Ontario to compare the BRZ trims side by side, sit in the cabin, and ask our team about current availability.
