How the 2026 Outback’s 980-Litre Cargo Space and X-MODE Manage Long Weekend Adventures

The drive out of Ontario on a long-weekend Friday is already a workout. Loading a vehicle with bikes, camping gear, and a cooler that needs to survive two nights of paddling trips adds another layer. The 2026 Subaru Outback is shaped around exactly this kind of use, not just capable enough, but specifically designed for it.

Why Ontario’s Long Weekends Demand More Than a Crossover

Cottage routes are not gentle. Highway 400 demands confident merging with a loaded roof. The gravel road to the lake demands clearance and traction. And the cargo hold needs to handle what a full family weekend actually requires, which is more than most crossovers plan for.

The 2026 Outback offers 980 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, with a load floor that spans 1,100 mm wide, wider than most competitors in the segment. Fold the rear seats and total cargo volume reaches 2,280 litres. The cargo area is also 50 mm taller than the previous generation, so bulkier items stand upright without forcing the liftgate to stay open.

Eight utility hooks inside the cargo area each hold up to 2.7 kg, giving you anchor points for wet gear, clothing, or equipment without relying on bungee cords. A configurable tonneau cover made from recycled materials separates muddy items from dry ones and keeps valuables out of view on trailhead parking lots.

High-capacity roof rails are standard. The Wilderness adds ladder-style rails with measurement markers and a static load rating of 363 kg.

The Specs That Cover the Distance and the Terrain

Two engine families cover different trip profiles.

The Touring runs a 2.5L naturally aspirated horizontally-opposed four-cylinder producing 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Lineartronic CVT. At 7.5 L/100 km on the highway and a 68 L fuel tank, that works out to roughly 900 km of highway range per fill, enough to reach the far end of Northern Ontario without a detour.

If your trailer is a jet ski or a light camping setup under 2,698 lbs (1,224 kg), the Touring tows it without issue.

The Limited XT and Premier XT carry a 2.4L turbocharged horizontally-opposed four-cylinder: 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque available from 2,000 rpm. That low-rpm pull matters when you’re merging onto the 400 with a full roof rack or pulling a loaded boat trailer. Both XT trims tow up to 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg), enough for a 16-foot fishing boat or a mid-sized utility trailer. Highway fuel economy comes in at 8.3 L/100 km, reasonable for the added output.

The Wilderness uses the same 2.4L turbocharged engine (260 hp, 277 lb-ft) and also tows 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg), while adding 241 mm of ground clearance versus 220 mm on the other trims. All-terrain Bridgestone Dueler tires on 17-inch matte black wheels, a dual-mode X-MODE system with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, and electronically controlled dampers with an off-road mode complete the package.

Symmetrical Full-Time AWD is standard across every trim. A revised centre differential locks up faster than before, cutting wheelspin on gravel and wet pavement. X-MODE is standard on all trims, managing throttle, brakes, and torque distribution in low-traction situations. The revised system also incorporates steering angle data for better stability at turn-in on higher-speed roads.

Every 2026 Outback includes EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with Front Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centring, Emergency Stop Assist, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, and Acceleration Override Assist. On designated highways, certain trims support hands-free driving with driver supervision up to 135 km/h, along with Highway Active Lane Change Assist and Pre-Curve Speed Control.

On a four-hour run to Northern Ontario, those features reduce the fatigue that builds after the second hour. New low-fatigue seats mounted directly to the chassis reduce head movement, and lateral sway is down 42 per cent versus the previous generation. Wind noise is reduced by 10 per cent.

The 2026 Outback, including the Wilderness, earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award under 2026’s more stringent testing criteria, which added a rear-seat test dummy and more comprehensive crash-prevention evaluation.

Which Trim Fits Your Trip

The Touring is the right choice for most Ontario cottage routes. The 2.5L engine handles highway passing, light trailers, and gravel roads without drama. Its fuel economy is the best in the lineup, and every EyeSight feature is already on board. If you’re not regularly towing more than 2,698 lbs (1,224 kg) and your roads are paved or light gravel, you don’t need to spend further.

The Limited XT or Premier XT makes sense if you tow a heavier boat or trailer, do regular loaded highway merging, or want the extra pull of 277 lb-ft from low rpm. The step up to the turbocharged engine also brings a 13-speaker audio system on the Limited XT. For towing power and long-haul comfort, these trims hit a practical peak.

The Wilderness is for the trips where the last stretch of road isn’t a road. The 241 mm of clearance, all-terrain tires, and dual-mode X-MODE handle creek crossings and rutted trails that would stop a standard crossover. A 360-degree camera helps when navigating tight off-road camping spots. If your routes include ATV tracks or seriously soft ground, the Wilderness is worth the upgrade over the standard trims.

Plan Your Next Trip with the Right Outback

The 2026 Subaru Outback offers a 68 L tank, standard AWD, up to 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) of towing capacity, 980 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, and an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, a well-rounded package for Ontario’s long-weekend runs, from highway drives to gravel backroads.

Visit Subaru of Maple in Vaughan to explore the Outback lineup and talk through which trim fits your routes. Book a test drive and load up the cargo area to see how it handles your gear.
