10 Upgrades That Define Subaru's Wilderness Models

Subaru's Wilderness badge represents the ultimate expression of off-road capability in the brand's lineup. The 2025 Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek Wilderness models feature comprehensive upgrades designed for drivers who demand more from their vehicles. These aren't merely appearance packages—they're purpose-built machines engineered for genuine off-road performance while maintaining Subaru's renowned on-road comfort and safety.

Each Wilderness model transforms its standard counterpart through a series of meaningful mechanical, aesthetic, and functional improvements. These specialized vehicles allow you to push further into the backcountry, tackle more challenging terrain, and carry more adventure gear than their standard siblings. Here are the ten defining upgrades that separate Wilderness models from the rest of Subaru's lineup.

1- Increased Ground Clearance

The most immediately noticeable Wilderness upgrade comes in the form of significantly increased ground clearance. The 2025 Outback Wilderness offers an impressive 241 mm of clearance, while the Forester and Crosstrek Wilderness models provide 235 mm—substantial improvements over their standard counterparts. This additional height allows you to navigate rocks, ruts, and uneven terrain with reduced risk of underbody damage.

The lifted suspension doesn't just provide more room beneath the vehicle; it's completely retuned to maintain Subaru's characteristic handling while accommodating the height increase. The suspension geometry changes ensure proper wheel alignment and predictable handling despite the taller ride height, giving you confidence both on and off paved surfaces.

2- All-Terrain Tires with Specialized Wheels

Every Wilderness model comes equipped with Yokohama GEOLANDAR all-terrain tires mounted on distinctive 17-inch black-painted alloy wheels. These tires feature an aggressive tread pattern that provides superior grip in mud, snow, and loose surfaces while remaining reasonably quiet on pavement. The sidewalls are also reinforced to resist punctures from rocks and trail debris.

The black-painted wheels aren't just for appearance—their design accommodates the specific needs of off-road driving, including extra protection for the valve stems and a load rating appropriate for the increased gear capacity these vehicles offer. The wheel and tire package strikes an ideal balance between off-road capability and everyday drivability.

3- Enhanced X-MODE System

Subaru's dual-function X-MODE system receives specific calibration in Wilderness models. This sophisticated traction management technology adjusts throttle sensitivity, transmission shifting, and differential power distribution to maximize grip in challenging conditions. The system features specialized Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes that alter vehicle behavior to suit different terrains.

In Wilderness models, X-MODE remains engaged at higher speeds than in standard Subarus, allowing continuous traction management during moderate-speed off-road driving. The system also integrates hill descent control that automatically manages speed on steep downhill sections, letting you focus on steering rather than braking.

4- Modified Drivetrain Components

All three Wilderness models feature significant modifications to their drivetrains. The Outback Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4L engine producing 260 hp, while the Forester and Crosstrek Wilderness models employ naturally-aspirated 2.5L engines generating 182 hp. More importantly, all three feature revised final drive ratios that provide improved low-speed torque delivery for climbing and obstacle navigation.

The Lineartronic CVT in each Wilderness model includes a transmission oil cooler that enables increased towing capacity—up to 1,588 kg for the Crosstrek and Forester Wilderness, and even more for the Outback Wilderness. The revised transfer case and rear differential gearing deliver power more effectively at low speeds, dramatically improving climbing ability compared to standard models.

5- Rugged Exterior Protection

Wilderness models feature comprehensive exterior protection elements that both shield the vehicle and signal its capabilities. Thicker, more durable body cladding wraps around wheel arches and lower body sections, protecting against brush, rocks, and debris. The front bumper design includes integrated skid plate protection and improved approach angles for tackling steep terrain.

Distinctive copper-coloured recovery points (two in front, two in rear) provide secure attachment points for recovery straps. These aren't merely decorative—they're engineered to withstand the forces involved in vehicle recovery operations. The Outback and Forester Wilderness models also feature protective cladding along their rocker panels for additional side-impact protection on narrow trails.

6- High-Capacity Roof Rails

One of the most practical Wilderness upgrades comes in the form of reinforced roof rails with substantially increased static load capacity. While standard Subaru models typically support around 75 kg on their roof rails, Wilderness variants can handle up to 318 kg when parked. This allows for the use of rooftop tents and other heavy gear that would exceed the capacity of standard models.

These roof rails feature distinctive copper accents and include built-in tie-down points for securing cargo. The increased capacity transforms these vehicles into more viable base camps for extended adventures, supporting heavy gear without compromising the vehicles' structural integrity.

7- All-Weather Interior Materials

The Wilderness treatment extends inside with specialized water-repellent upholstery Subaru calls StarTex. This material resists moisture, mud, and stains better than standard cloth or leather, making it ideal for outdoor activities. All Wilderness models also include all-weather floor mats that contain debris and moisture, protecting the underlying carpet.

Copper-coloured stitching and anodized copper-finish accents throughout the cabin visually connect interior and exterior design elements. The Wilderness logo appears embossed in the headrests, while all-weather cargo area mats complete the package. These materials allow you to enjoy outdoor activities without worrying about damaging your vehicle's interior.

8- Trail-Ready Technology

Wilderness models retain Subaru's commitment to technology while adapting it for off-road use. The Outback Wilderness features an 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen, while the Forester Wilderness uses an 8-inch display and the Crosstrek Wilderness includes an 11.6-inch system. All incorporate Subaru STARLINK connectivity with specialized features useful for adventure travel.

Each Wilderness model includes the latest version of EyeSight driver assistance technology, with features like Lane Centring Assist and Pre-Collision Braking. The front-view camera system helps navigate tight trails, while the X-MODE display provides real-time information about vehicle angle, direction, and traction management system status.

9- Distinctive Visual Identity

Wilderness models share a visual language that instantly distinguishes them from standard Subarus. Matte black anti-glare hood decals reduce sun reflection during off-road driving. Anodized copper accents on recovery points, roof rails, and badges create a distinctive colour signature across all three models. Hexagonal fog lights, black wheels, and model-specific grilles complete the look.

These visual elements aren't merely cosmetic—they serve as immediate indicators of the vehicles' enhanced capabilities. The unique front fascia designs improve approach angles, while the matte black hood treatment reduces glare in off-road environments. The distinctive stance created by the increased ride height and all-terrain tires completes the purposeful appearance.

10- Specialized Lighting Systems

All three Wilderness models feature LED steering-responsive headlights that pivot as you turn, illuminating curves and trail corners. The specialized fog light design provides wider dispersion for improved visibility in challenging conditions like fog, dust, and snow. The Outback Wilderness also includes an LED cargo light in the tailgate for improved visibility during nighttime gear access.

These lighting improvements enhance safety during off-road adventures that extend beyond daylight hours. Combined with the vehicles' increased ground clearance and all-terrain tires, they allow you to confidently navigate unfamiliar terrain in varied lighting conditions.

The 2025 Subaru Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek Wilderness models transform capable vehicles into exceptional adventure machines through these ten key upgrades. Every enhancement serves a specific purpose, contributing to vehicles that excel both on forest service roads and daily commutes. By combining increased capability with Subaru's renowned reliability and safety, these Wilderness models invite you to explore further while maintaining everyday practicality.
