Your Guide to Choosing Between the 2025 Subaru Outback and Forester in the Greater Toronto Area

Choosing between the 2025 Subaru Outback and 2025 Forester depends on understanding how each vehicle aligns with your specific needs and driving patterns. Both offer standard all-wheel drive and proven reliability, but they serve different priorities for Ontario families.

These two models represent different approaches to the same goal: providing capable, practical transportation for varying lifestyles. Examining their key differences helps you identify which better matches your daily routine and weekend activities.

Performance and Efficiency

The Outback offers two engine choices, including a turbocharged 2.4-litre option that produces 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This additional power benefits highway driving and towing, with a maximum capacity of 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs) when properly equipped.

The Forester uses a single 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. While less powerful than the turbo Outback, this engine provides adequate performance for most driving situations and delivers slightly better fuel economy.

Both vehicles use Subaru's Lineartronic CVT and come standard with Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive, providing similar capability in adverse weather conditions.

The turbocharged Outback engine includes an intercooler and advanced engine management systems that optimize power delivery across different driving conditions. The Forester's naturally aspirated engine provides immediate throttle response without the slight lag that turbocharged engines sometimes exhibit.

Interior Space and Practicality

The Forester's taller roofline creates a more spacious feeling interior with easier entry and exit. The upright seating position provides visibility, particularly beneficial for navigating busy GTA traffic or tight parking spaces.

The Outback's lower, more car-like seating position appeals to drivers who prefer a traditional sedan feel while still gaining SUV ground clearance and cargo space. The Outback's 920 litres of cargo space significantly exceeds the Forester's 818 litres, making it better suited for families who regularly transport large items.

Forester passengers benefit from the higher seating position that provides better visibility over other vehicles. The upright seating position also makes entering and exiting the vehicle easier for passengers with mobility concerns.

The Outback's lower seating position creates a more car-like driving experience while still providing the ground clearance and all-wheel drive capability of an SUV.

Technology and Features

Both models come standard with Subaru's latest EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, including Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Centring Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The Forester includes a new Emergency Stop Assist feature that can bring the vehicle to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

Available infotainment systems differ slightly, with both offering touchscreens and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility on higher trim levels.

Both vehicles offer multiple infotainment configurations depending on trim level. Base models include smaller touchscreens with essential connectivity features, while higher trims feature larger displays with navigation systems and premium audio systems.

Ground Clearance and Capability

The Outback's 220 mm of ground clearance provides more clearance than typical sedans or crossovers. This advantage becomes noticeable when navigating rough cottage roads or parking lots with tall speed bumps.

Both vehicles feature X-MODE systems for enhanced traction in challenging conditions, with dual-mode versions available on higher trim levels.

X-MODE enhances the standard all-wheel drive system by optimizing power distribution and braking control when traction becomes limited. Hill Descent Control, included with X-MODE, automatically maintains a controlled speed when descending steep grades.

Which Model is Right for You?

Choose the Forester if you prioritize:

  • Higher seating position and easier entry/exit
  • Lower entry price point
  • Better fuel economy
  • SUV-like driving feel
  • Easy visibility in urban driving

Choose the Outback if you prioritize:

  • Maximum cargo capacity
  • Available turbocharged power
  • Car-like handling characteristics
  • Higher towing capacity
  • More ground clearance for rough terrain

Both vehicles deliver Subaru's core values of safety, reliability, and all-weather capability. The choice comes down to whether you prefer the Forester's SUV character or the Outback's wagon-like practicality.

Experience both vehicles back-to-back at Subaru of Maple to feel the difference and determine which fits your lifestyle better.
